There is a good news and sad enough, a bad news is associated with it.
Opportunities for online language translators are constantly on the rise and it especially a good news for a country like India, where there are 22 official languages. Translators now have the convenience of working from home with minimum facilities like a PC, internet connection and a little PC and typing skills. Fortune 500 companies like Google are expanding their market share with new projects like multi-language Wikipedia and other knowledge based information websites.
The online translation work requires the Translator to do 3 things to complete any translation assignment. 1. Translation 2. Transliteration (using Google Translator Tool Kit) 3. HTML and miscellaneous tagging.
Now let us come to the bad news. The software/bpo/ companies, which are assigned with such translation contracts, charges their clients in foreign currency, but subcontract the work to freelance translators for a meagre amount, usually less than 60 paise per word. And that too, with an expectation of a quality of above 98% with strict adherence of deadlines. Some Companies even exploit the freelancers by making payments only after a month or so. To add insult to the injury, deductions on the pretext of errors and omissions are also not uncommon.
So, anyone who are on the lookout for online translation as profession is advised to take care of this, so as to avoid exploitation by those greedy companies.
